Henry T. Buxton settled in this place in 1884, and was appointed its first postmaster on December 27, 1886. He was a son of Henry Buxton, a pioneer of 1841, and the town was named for his family. Buxton station on the Portland, Astoria & Pacific Railroad was above Mendenhall Creek east of the town.
