Ben
Weathers, postmaster of Enterprise in 1925, informed the writer
that the community was named in 1887. A meeting was held in
a tent owned by a mercantile company, and several names were
suggested, including Bennett Flat, Wallowa City, Franklin,
and Fairfield. Finally, R. F. Stubblefield suggested Enterprise,
and that name was selected by a majority vote. The post office
was established November 9, 1887, with Catherine Akin first
postmaster.
