The
city of Maywood Park was incorporated by vote of the residents
August 1, 1967. The triangular area northeast of Rocky
Butte was opened as a subdivision in 1926 and, by 1940,
was a fully developed suburb. In the 1960s, the OSHD located
I-205 through the edge of Maywood Park, and this sparked
a movement to incorporate, as some opponents of freeway
construction felt city status could prevent the highway
encroachment or minimize its effect. Authur M. Taylor,
the developer, wrote the compiler in 1968 to say that the
name was selected by his mother one wintry evening when
they were remembering what a lovely spot the woods were
in May. During the 1980s, there was a portland post office
branch named Maywood Park.
